- Total Time: 30m
- Yield: 8 Pupusas
- Category: Recipes
Ingredients
- 2 cups Masa Harina (often found in the Mexican food section of most groceries)
- 1 cup Warm Water
- 1/2 cup Chopped Spinach
- 1/2 cup Shredded White Melty Cheese (Monterey Jack, Mozzarella)
- 1 Tomato, diced
- 1/4 cup Onion, diced
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- Olive or vegetable Oil
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine masa, water and salt. With lightly oiled hands, mix until dough comes together into a moist but firm ball.
- Separate dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball with your hands, adding water if cracks form.
- Use your thumb to create a small pocket in the center of the ball.
- Mix together spinach, cheese, tomato, onion and salt in a small bowl.
- Fill about 1 1/2 tbsp of the mixture into each ball. Pinch the edges of the dough together to close the hole.
- Flatten your ball of masa by gently shaping the ball with your thumbs and palms.
- Heat about 1 tbsp of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place a couple pupusas at a time in the skillet and cook both sides about 2-3 minutes each. You are looking for a nicely toasted, light-brown crispiness.
- Serve pupusas warm with salsa, curtido (pickled cabbage), sour cream or your favorite toppings.
